Knives are made of different parts joined together which comprise of the blade, handle and tang. The tang is an extension of the backside of the blade that extends into the handle. There are two major types of tangs used for knives. The first type is the full tang which runs from the grip to the tip of the knife. It may or may not extend the entire width of your handle. The second type is the partial tang which is somehow narrower and is partly inserted inside into the knife’s handle. Both types have their pros and cons. This article will educate on the essential things that you should know about the tangs.
This type of tang is very strong. Full tangs that cover the width of the knife are very effective as they do not easily allow bending, and can therefore be used to perform hard tasks such as cutting hard materials. You will realize that is now easy to get best bang for your buck knives from various stalls and online platforms.
You can alter the balance point of your knife if it has a full tang because the full tang increases the metals stock amount on your knife. The additional weight on the handle of your knife offsets the weight on the blade moving back the rotational equilibrium point towards your hand where you can easily control the knife more flexibly.
It is important to take note of the type of material being used to make the handle of your knife. The type of handle should be strong enough to match up to the strength of the tang. You will notice that the rate at which different grips contract and expand is different over wide ranges of temperatures. With time, you may notice that the knife becomes loose at the handle because the pins, tang and handle materials expand and contract differently.
You should also take good care of your knife that has a full tang because it has a larger surface area exposed to corroding factors such as moisture. Familiar to do so may lead to quicker damage of your knife.
This type of tang cannot be able to hold as much force as a full tang can. You will be limited to using lesser force on the handle to avoid breakage or bending. You should note that there are different methods used to attach a blade with a partial tang to its handle. One of the most common methods used is by drilling a hole shaped like the tang into the handle, putting some epoxy glue into the handle and fixing the tang inside. The epoxy is allowed to settle and then holes are drilled across the handle to put pins for more support.
Another method that you can use is; cut the grip halfway lengthwise, drill some holes on both halves for fitting the rivets to support thee tang then add some adhesive between the tang and the halves.
A partial tang has its own fair share of benefits which include; reduced weight on the handle, it can be used on knives that are irregularly shaped on the grip and reduced surface area exposed to corrosion therefore making it to last longer.
